The narrative includes details about the prisoners' descent into madness, self-mutilation, and aggression. The story is typically presented in a first-person perspective, adding to its eerie and unsettling nature.

The Beginning

In 1947, the Soviet Union was locked in a cold war with the United States and its allies and was desperate to gain an edge in the arms race. They started conducting a series of experiments on human subjects, hoping to find a way to create super-soldiers who could endure extreme conditions and fight without rest.

One of these experiments involved five political prisoners. They were offered a chance to earn their freedom if they agreed to participate in a test that would last for 30 days. The test involved staying awake in a sealed chamber, where they would be exposed to a gas that would prevent them from falling asleep.

The prisoners were told that they would be killed if they tried to escape or harm themselves or each other. They were also warned that the gas was harmless, but that they might experience some side effects, such as paranoia, hallucinations, and mood swings.

The prisoners nodded and agreed to the terms. They settled into their bunks and began to chat with each other, trying to pass the time. But, they had no idea what horrors awaited them in the coming days…

The Breakdown

As the experiment progressed, the prisoners began to exhibit signs of stress, becoming paranoid and whispering about each other into the microphones. The prisoners gradually became more and more disturbed and violent as the experiment progressed. Nine days in, two of the prisoners started running around the chamber, yelling so hard their vocal cords nearly broke.

The others also began to harm themselves, tearing off their flesh and organs, and smearing them on the walls and windows. They showed no signs of pain or fear and seemed to have superhuman strength and endurance. They also refused to eat or drink and begged the researchers to keep the gas on.

On the 15th day, the researchers decided to end the experiment and entered the chamber to retrieve the prisoners. They were shocked by what they saw: four of them were still alive, but barely recognizable as human beings. 

They had mutilated themselves beyond repair and had eaten parts of their dead companion. They attacked the researchers and soldiers who tried to remove them from the chamber, killing one and injuring several others. They screamed that they did not want to sleep and that they would die if they did.

The researchers managed to subdue and restrain the prisoners and attempted to treat their wounds. However, they found that the prisoners had no pulse, no blood pressure, and no brain activity. They were somehow alive, but not human. They also resisted any sedatives or anesthetics, and continued to struggle and scream.

The Aftermath

The prisoners were all in bad shape when they were taken to the hospital. They were all suffering from the effects of severe sleep deprivation, hallucinations, delusions, agitation, aggression, and withdrawal. 

They were all treated for their physical and psychological injuries, but they never fully recovered from the experience. It should be noted that some committed suicide in the following weeks. When the experiment's horrors could no longer be contained, authorities made the fateful decision to terminate it by killing the other prisoners.

It is a fictional tale that uses elements of Soviet history, science, and psychology to create a disturbing and gruesome scenario. There is no evidence that such an experiment ever took place, or that such a gas ever existed.
